Neednot

If you don't need it, maybe you don't actually want it.

Neednot keeps track of the things you want and reads when you come back to them on your own, not how many times.

It asks you one question: What are you actually after here?

Nothing ever locks. No timer runs. You can buy at any moment.

How it works

Other apps in this space put a timer on your want and call the wait discipline. Neednot never locks anything.

  1. Capture it and say why

Take a photo of the thing or share a link. Then say out loud what result you expect it to bring. If you cannot name a result, that is worth knowing too.

  2. Tally it when the thought comes back

Each time the thought returns on its own, add a tally. Nothing locks and no timer runs. You are not counting days.

  3. See the spacing

Neednot reads how the tallies are spaced, not how many there are. Same count, opposite meaning.

Five thoughts can mean two different things

You cannot see your own six month pattern, and you cannot trust your memory of it. Neednot shows you both at once.

Five thoughts in one evening

They bunch up. The count looks like a craving.

Five thoughts over a few weeks

They spread unevenly. Some weeks, nothing.

Five thoughts across five months

They keep coming back. The count looks like conviction.

Same number of thoughts. The spacing is what changes.

The wants you never gave a reason for

Wanting something is not the same as wanting a result. A want with no stated reason and no spontaneous tallies is surfaced on its own, quietly, next to the things you did explain.

It is not a score and it is not a warning. It is a want you have never said out loud why you want.

Your wants stay on your iPhone

No account. No servers. No sync. No analytics and no crash reporting. Wanting is private, and the data stays private.

When you share a link, your phone asks that page for its title and picture. That page's owner sees the request, the same way they would see it from your browser.
